STUDENT
TRAVEL INSURANCE COVER EXPLAINED
Why
every travelling student needs student travel insurance
Whether you’re going on a short
break or holiday, taking a gap year or backpacking around the
world, one of the essentials to take with you is a good travel
insurance policy. When planning a trip abroad or travelling
by any means, there is always a risk of walking into problems
that can be very expensive.
Travel insurance is designed to ensure that you are ‘covered’,
that is you are not out of pocket, typically for the following
risks of travelling.
• Cancellation Cover - It’s normal
to pay for accommodation, flights travel and so on before you
go. If you have to cancel, you want to be sure you can get your
money back quickly and in full.
• Medical Expenses Cover - If you fall
ill, the cost of treatment abroad or of flying you home could
run to many thousands of pounds. Around one in three travel
insurance claims are due to medical problems.
• Personal Liability Cover - If you accidentally
hurt someone or damage their property, you could receive a large
claim for damages.
• Personal Possessions Cover - You might
need to replace personal belongings that have been lost or stolen.
Unlike car insurance, travel insurance
is not compulsory. In reality some tour operators insist that
you do have cover for particular holidays or activities that
they provide. If the requirement to have insurance is made
clear then the tour operator is obliged to tell you about
any suitable travel cover it can offer, which is usually at
a premium!
You cannot be forced to take out the tour operator’s
own insurance, this is now illegal! In ninety-nine cases out
of one hundred you will find cheaper travel insurance on the
Internet.
In practice, tour operators sometimes try to make it very
difficult for you to exercise your right to shop around.
It is common practice for operators and travel agents to refuse
to confirm your holiday booking until you show evidence of
adequate travel insurance.
If you have not arranged cover beforehand, you may risk losing
a particular holiday or special deal and be tempted to sign up for
the tour operator’s own insurance after all, losing money!
All these problems can be avoided if you buy a good policy
before you book the holiday or invest in an annual policy
if you are a frequent traveller.
If you’re travelling in the UK, you probably do not
need a travel insurance policy. Health problems that occur
in the UK will be covered by the NHS, and if you have an ‘all-risks’
extension to your parents or your own possessions or house
contents insurance, you’ll be covered in the event of
theft. But if, say, you’re staying in rented accommodation,
you might want insurance to cover you against damaging the
property or its contents. And if you’ll be taking part
in adventurous activities or sports, taking out suitable insurance
would be wise. All travel insurance policies available online
cover you for differing geographical areas depending upon
where you are travelling. As most people need to travel to
the airport or port to leave the country, cover for travelling
in the UK is usually automatically included when you are travelling
abroad.
All of the above applies equally to school or college trips
and excursions. If you’ll be going abroad or on an activity
or study trip, personal travel insurance is not only sensible,
but essential if you want ‘no worries’ for a very
small price in rekation to the amount of cover and peace of
mind it brings. The school or college might offer to arrange
cover, but you do not have to take up the policy chosen by
the school. You can instead arrange your own insurance. You
may already included on insurance arranged by your parents
however you should check that the policy covers you while
travelling alone.
